What Does 'Musicality' Mean to You?

Hi everyone!

"Be more musical!" We’ve all heard it—but what does it actually mean?

Musicality might feel like one of those mysterious, intangible traits… but each of us brings our own definition, experience, and interpretation to the word.

So this week, we ask: What does 'musicality' mean to YOU?

  • Is it about phrasing? Emotion? Timing?
  • Can it be taught—or is it something you feel?
  • Was there a moment you truly felt you played musically for the first time?

💬 Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, your perspective is valuable. Let’s unpack this elusive idea together.

Sometimes I think I’m playing musically and a teacher will tell me to think about the phrasing. Meaning what is that group of notes leading up to?  Some notes are more important and some just add character. Then I also need to think about bowing. Where do I need add speed or weight. This doesn’t seem to be innate to me or else Im too busy thinking about something else and am distracted from understanding what the piece is trying to say.
