How Do You Choose Your Next Piece to Learn?

Choosing your next piece of repertoire can be a fun but sometimes tricky decision! I’m curious to hear from you all – how do you pick your next piece to learn?

Do you focus on pieces that will help you develop a specific technical skill, explore a new style or composer, or maybe tackle something that’s been on your bucket list for years? Perhaps you have a teacher guiding your choices, or you like to go with whatever inspires you at the moment.

I’d love to hear about your current repertoire and why you chose it! What factors went into your decision, and how are you finding the process of learning it so far?

Share your thoughts and let’s chat about repertoire!

I look for one from appropriate level lists eg AMEB syllabus. Then I'll listen to recordings and look at the music before deciding.

AMEB is the Australian Music Examinations Board which runs exams in Australia. They have a syllabus that can be purchased at https://www.ameb.edu.au it is also available as a download. Also ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) - UK organisation, also have a similar syllabus, which I believe you can see online at https://www.abrsm.org/en-gb/instruments/bowed-strings/viola for free. In my opinion, AMEB is slightly more advanced than ABRSM. Both have exam grades from Preliminary to Grade 8 and beyond. Exams are a mixture of pieces (and also scales/arpeggios/technical plus some other things, depending which syllabus you choose to follow).
